Materials Planner

Responsible for materials inventory planning and plan execution to support all production activities at the Asheboro, NC facility. Procurement of inbound raw materials. Maintain control of ingredient and packaging inventories. Coordinates required responses to unanticipated demands with purchasing, scheduling, operations, warehousing and transportation teams. Supports all activities to accomplish the Operations targets. Support, implement, and maintain food safety practices as required through SQF. Responsible for completing job duties in a manner that supports all plant safety, food safety, quality and environmental practices.


  • Materials Planning
  1. Procurement of ingredients, packaging and expensed items.

  2. Maintain materials availability in support of the production plans.

  3. Communicate causes and impacts of any issues with the availability of components needed for the completion of the production plan with appropriate departments and team members.

  4. In conjunction with the Materials Manager, develop and maintain strong relationships with all suppliers to ensure a reliable supply chain and effectively react to and support changes in production schedules.

  5. Ensure materials variability during the introduction of new product launches.

  • Inventory Control
  1. Maintain appropriate inventory levels for all ingredients and packaging supplies to maintain plant production while minimizing working capital.

  2. Manage the process of any non-compliant components from identification through final disposition.

  3. Proactively manage impending obsolete, aged and discontinued materials to minimize loss.

  4. Provide support and direction to team members with all inventory systems and processes.

  • Shipping & Receiving
  1. Coordinate inbound ingredient and packaging deliveries and inter-company transfers.

  2. Communicate requirements between and with suppliers, freight carriers and warehouse team members.

  3. Coordinate resolutions for any non-compliant delivery or quality documentation with suppliers.

  4. Direct the vendor return process.

  • Team Supervision

  • Manage the four-member team comprising the Bulk Commodities Unload group.

  • Coordinate inbound deliveries with over the road and rail line providers.

  • General Duties

  1. Provide recommendations to improve service, quality of work, and reduce costs through process or executional improvements.

  2. Coordinate activities to pursue opportunities and resolve issues. Document, communicate and follow-up on action plans.

  3. Identify, capture, analyze, and report critical performance measures.

  4. Information technology – demonstrate competence with all software systems and modules including, Inventory, Purchasing, Scheduling, Production, Transportation and Business applications and data-mining/query tools.

  5. Perform other functions or services as required or assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree Supply Chain Management or related field preferred. Experience may be substituted for education. Integrated business systems experience like ERP/DRP/MRP/MPS is preferred. Professional certification like APICS is desirable.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience operating in a MRP environment in areas of purchasing/procurement, production/inventory control, production scheduling, master scheduling, demand management, capacity management, or distribution resource planning. Direct front line team member supervision preferred.

  • Skills: Broad knowledge of manufacturing and logistics processes and planning systems. Cost control, cost-benefit analysis and the implementation of productivity improvements. Excellent communication and presentation skills. A high level of competence in PC applications and the ability to use technology as a decision support tool. Ability to coordinate and move forward on planned activities in a team environment. Collaboration, decision making, problem solving, results orientation, ability to establish clear objectives for self and others; identify deviations from plan and facilitate resolution. Focus on meeting the demand plan at the lowest delivered cost to the Customer.

  • Additional Requirements: Must be able to read, write, and communicate in the English language; Must wear company-issued uniforms (snap-front shirt & pants) and required PPE (bump-cap, hair net, beard net, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc.); Excellent attendance; Flexibility to adjust work schedule outside of traditional business hours if business conditions require.; Must follow established safety procedures.
